“For ten years much has been talked about the “Rail Baltica”, but not much work has been done. Only in the summer of 2009 the first agreements on the construction of the “Rail Baltica” have been signed. Our objective is to start and finish until 2013 the implementation of the project”, said Minister Masiulis.

According to the Minister, until 1 March it is foreseen to prepare the plans of measures for the construction of the “Rail Baltica” on the whole Lithuanian territory from Polish State border to Latvian border. This plan should indicate the scope of works, the terms and resources of implementation. Until 1 May we also should submit to the Government the possible schemes of financing model for “Rail Baltica” project regarding the opportunity of including a strategic investor.

By the instruction of the Government the Ministry of Transport and Communications together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will address the European Commission regarding the possibility of

using for the “Rail Baltica” project the finances intended for the urgent actions necessary for the implementation of “Rail Baltica” project. This plan contains the proposal for the reconstruction of the existing 1520 mm gauge railway line Polish/Lithuanian State border–Mockava–Šeštokai–Marijampolė–Kazlų Rūda–Kaunas by parallel construction of 1435 gauge railway line or making an additional 1435 gauge railway line along the existing line. This should enable a considerable cost efficiency of the project implementation, and more rapid implementation of the project will give a possibility to retain the project in the list of TEN-T priority projects.
