2006 11 20

The XVth session of the International Coordination Council for Trans-Siberian Transportation held on 17 October in Vilnius can assist in making Klaipėda Seaport part of the routes of the longest in the world Trans-Siberian Railway.

The economic growth of Lithuania’s neighbouring countries, particularly that of Asia Kazakhstan, China and others – allows to forecast an adequate increase in the demand for cargo transport by rail. The transit of cargo to Europe through Klaipėda Seaport and integration of the latter into Trans-Siberian routes would inure to the benefit of both Lithuania and the neighbouring countries ( Russia, Belarus). Therefore, according to Minister Algirdas Butkevičius, a common effort is necessary to seek that favourable conditions are put in place for Kazakhstan, China and other Asian countries in order to encourage them to select Klaipėda Seaport for transportation of their cargoes carried over this railway to the European Union market.
