On 11 November, Mr. Arvydas Vaitkus, Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, attended a meeting with Ms. Johanna Ruigrok, Ambassadress Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Lithuania.

The subject of the meeting was the opportunities and prospects for Klaipėda Sea Port in relation to cargo transit through the sea ports under construction in the neighbouring countries, more specifically, the Russian Ust – Luga Sea Port, intensified third party cargo flow to the Lithuanian sea port and furthering co-operation with the Kingdom of the Netherlands in this field.

According to the Secretary of the Ministry Mr. Vaitkus, the geographic position of the sea port, a high quality of services and reasonable prices render the sea port competitive with other sea ports of the region. According to him, the sea port ranks first in the region by cargo load (not including St PetersburgSeaPort). Highly conducive to this was launching of container freight trains “Vikingas” and “Merkurijus”, which have made a connection between the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea, and between Klaipėda and Moscow. Unfortunately, as a result of protectionist railway tariff policies pursued by the Russian Federation, its cargoes in our sea port are almost gone. Their place was taken by cargoes from Belarus that is one of the key Lithuania’s partners in cargo transit.
