On July 11 the Minister of Transport and Communications Algirdas Butkevičius participated at the opening ceremony of the modernised Kena border railway station. The works have been financed from the State budget, EU funding, and a share of investments earned by JSC “Lithuanian Railways”.

Kena border crossing point is being rearranged to the train receiving-issuance border point, where customs will be operating together with State border guard service officials, veterinary and fytosanitary posts. The working conditions of railway infrastructure servicing staff will be considerably improved.

JSC “Lithuanian Railways” constantly carries out railway infrastructure renovation and modernisation projects: capital rehabilitation of roads, bridges, and overpasses, implementation of new signalling systems, automation, communication, information systems, and extension of station tracks. This year the design works of “Rail Baltica” railway track are starting, and Kaunas tunnel reconstruction works have been launched this year as well.

According to the EU support and State investment programmes for 2008-2013 it is planned to invest LTL 2.8 billion into the renovation and modernisation of Lithuanian railways.
