Lithuania and Ukraine signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the development of the railway project “Viking”
For efficient delivery of competitive services it is planned to simplify and unify the procedures of border crossing in all countries participating in the “Viking” project. At seaports, efforts will be made to reduce the time of inspection of containers to the period of 2 hours. It has been proposed to reduce tariffs on the ferry lines belonging to Ukraine, thus aiming at the attraction of more cargo from Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

“Good transport links make favorable conditions for the development of trade and economic relations. The fact that the Memorandum of Understanding has been signed during the meeting of the highest-level leaders of both countries indicates not only the economical but also the political importance of the “Viking” project”, said Minister Eligijus Masiulis.

First “Viking” trains started shuttling between the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea in the year 2003. In 2009, “Viking”, as a long-term project successfully operating in the international market, was awarded the prize of European Intermodal Association. It is expected that in the future the project, which is operating already for the period of eight years, will attract more considerable amounts of cargo transported between Europe and Asia.
