Lithuania Supports the EU Objective to Become Member of the Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail (OTIF

On 6-7 September, Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications Liudmila Zumerienė and interim Director of the Railway Transport Department Simas Garuolis participated in the General Assembly of the Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail (OTIF) held in Berne. 

One of the most important issues to Lithuania, and the whole European Union railroad sector, concerning the EU joining OTIF organisation were considered at the General Assembly of OTIF. It was discussed how to further organise the negotiations between the EU and OTIF on this matter. In the opinion of the participants of the forum, a full agreement on application of the rule of law has to be reached.  

It was decided to continue to revise technical specifications of COTIF regulating general technical standards and mutual recognition of the railway transport objects. The issues of compliance of the provisions of COTIF with the EU legislation concerning the utilisation of railway infrastructure in international transport, management of the Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Railand membership fees were also considered at the Assembly.
