Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications met with Ukrainian, German and Swedish Ministers of Transport

On May 29 at Transport Ministers’ forum held in Leipzig (Germany) Ministers discussed the development of joint transport projects. 

 

Mr. Algirdas Butkevičius, Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications, met with Mr. Josif Vinski, Ukrainian Minister of Transport, and discussed the development of container train “Viking” route in line with the implementation of Lithuanian, Belorussian and Ukrainian Agreement on cargo transportation between the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea.   

 

At the tripartite meeting of Lithuania , Ukraine and Turkey , that was held later on, Mr. Binali Yildirim, Transport Minister of Turkey , reiterated the interest of his country to join the project of container train “Viking”. He suggested arranging in Istanbul an international conference on the development of “Viking” project.

 

At the meeting with German Transport Minister Mr. Wolfgang Tiefensee perspectives of cooperation in transport were discussed. Mr. W. Tiefensee and Mr. A. Butkevičius also discussed new regulations related to road transport proposed by the EU and to be discussed in the nearest Transport Council (12-13 June 2008).

 

Swedish Transport Minister Ms. Åsa Torstensson presented priorities of EU Presidency in 2009 and the strategy of EU Baltic Sea region countries. She indicated it as one of the main targets of Swedish Presidency. Also development perspectives of East-West transport corridor were discussed.
