“Lithuania, located on the crossroads of the main international transport corridors and possessing a well-developed infrastructure is ready to become transit centre for transportation of cargo from China to Europe”, stated Minister of Transport and Communications Algirdas Butkevičius, accompanying President Valdas Adamkus on his visit to the People's Republic of China, at the meeting with the businessmen of this country in a business forum “Discover Lithuania – Gateway to Europe” held in Shanghai.

Members of the Lithuanian delegation of transport specialists - Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications Arvydas Vaitkus, Director General of Klaipėda State Seaport Directorate Sigitas Dobilinskas and Director General of the company Lietuvos Geležinkeliai AB Stasys Dailydka - agreed to the idea expressed by President Valdas Adamkus that Lithuania and China had not as yet fully developed the existing potential for contacts and therefore in their presentation they introduced wide opportunities for the development of co-operation between China and Lithuania.

In their opinion, using of Klaipėda Seaport, located in a favourable geographical position, and transcontinental transport networks (TransSiberian and TransAsian corridors, TRACECA and the new Silk Road) opens perfect opportunities for transportation of cargo from Asia to Western and Northern Europe.
