“Measures taken by us for the improvement of traffic safety, such as an active work of the police, educational campaigns in the media, give good results – in 2009 the rate of deaths on Lithuanian roads was the lowest from 1965, however, it should be noted that now almost 2 million vehicles are using the roads, and in 1965 there were only a few dozens of thousands of road vehicles”, said Minister Masiulis.

According to the Minister, it is very positive that the rate of road accidents caused by drunk drivers was almost halved (in 2009 – 288, in 2008 – 508).

In 2009 the rate of traffic accidents with fatalities was lower by almost 1000 if compared with 2008 (in 2009 – 3844, in 2008 – 4796). In comparison with the year 2005 the rate of traffic accidents has decreased by almost 3000 (in 2005 – 6771).
