On 4 October, during the meeting at the Ministry of Transport and Communications, an interim study on the project Rail Baltica and the first steps of its implementation were presented to Minister Algirdas Butkevičius. This discussion was held preparing to the meeting with curator of the Rail Baltica project, appointed by the European Commission, Pavel Telichka who is coming to Vilnius on 25 October.

Taking into consideration the possibility to partially co-finance this project from the EU funds, Minister Butkevičius stressed the importance of implementing the project in several stages. During the financing period from 2007 to 2013, it will be required to raise funds for the implementation of the first stage – from the Polish border till Kaunas and later, being sure of the finances – from Kaunas till the Latvian border.

Minister of Transport and Communications Butkevičius stated that there are many talks and publications in the press about this project and that it is high time we moved to concrete works – drafting of legal acts required for the implementation of the Rail Baltica project, setting up the Organising Committee of the project, defining its competence boundaries and responsibilities.
