“The renewed plan of “Rail Baltica” technical and investment solutions will facilitate more rapid implementation of the project and will save expenses. We have clearly defined the action plan, therefore I am positive that the commenced real implementation works will be continued successfully”, said Eligijus Masiulis, Minister of Transport and Communications.
The plan foresees reconstruction of the existing wide railway gauge (1520 mm) on the line Polish/Lithuanian border –Marijampolė –Kazlų Rūda –Kaunas by parallelising this gauge with the European gauge (1435 mm), or construction of additional European gauge line along with the existing one. All the works on this stretch are due to be finished by January 2014. Furthermore, until the beginning of 2015 it is planned to establish Kaunas public logistics centre.
Construction of the European gauge line from Kaunas to Lithuanian/Latvian border is planned for a later period. Territorial planning documentation and technical contracting projects necessary for this railway line are planned to be prepared in the period of 2014 – 2025. More specified terms and necessary costs will be clear after the elaboration of the feasibility studies.
After implementation of “Rail Baltica” project Lithuania will have modern and comfortable railway transport links with countries of the European Union. This project is among the thirty priority European transport projects. In Lithuania the project is recognized as an important economic project of State importance.
