The main highways of the country are to be granted a status of special national importance
According to the Minister of Transport and Communications Eligijus Masiulis, a status of special national importance granted to the projects would encourage complex development and faster modernization of transport infrastructure, would allow improvement of the quality of national transport services and provide attractive investment conditions.

The highway “Via Baltica” across the North-South of Lithuania belongs to International transport corridor I and is part of TEN-T, a transeuropean transport network. It will have to conform to requirements for highways in the future.

The East-West intermodal transport corridor connects pre-existing European and Asian transport nodes and networks. Though only a small part of this transport corridor is in Lithuania, this part has especial importance for intercontinental cargo flows due to the fact that overland routes end and sea routes begin in Lithuania.

Ensuring high-quality East-West transport infrastructure would allow to open new cargo routes between Asia and Europe through the Klaipėda harbor. This would have major impact on the growth of national economy and its competitiveness in regional and international markets.
