“Due to its convenient geographical position, Lithuania is an attractive EU country for cargo transit from Kazakhstan to Northern and Western Europe”, stated Minister of Transport and Communications Algirdas Butkevičius during the 6th international conference TRANSEURASIA-2006 that took place on 21-22 September in Astana, Kazakhstan.

According to the Minister, further increase in volume of the cargo flow between Europe and Asia is forecasted in the future and the European Commission initiatives to develop TransEuropean transport corridors to the neighbouring countries will facilitate their integration in the East with the transport corridors located in Eurasia

The Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications noted that a combined transport train Vikingas, connecting the Odessa and Klaipėda Seaports, has been successfully running since 2003. Thus, already now we can successfully provide cargo transportation services from Eastern to Western and Northern European countries.

The Minister also pointed out that currently the opportunities offered by railway transport in carrying cargo from the East are not made full use of and therefore he invited the representatives of Kazakhstan and other countries to more actively seize this opportunity.
