At the meeting of the European Union Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council that took place on 12 October in Luxembourg, Minister of Transport and Communications Algirdas Butkevičius expressed the viewpoint of Lithuania towards the development of the European transport policy, the main guidelines and actions of the EU transport.

“We welcome the new approach towards the European transport policy of the European Commission expressed in the Communication of 6 June 2006 “Keep Europe moving - Sustainable mobility for our continent”, stated the Minister of Transport and Communications to members of the EU Council.

Speaking of future priorities of the European transport policy, Mr. Butkevičius emphasized the importance of connecting peripheral regions with the rest of Europe, ensuring efficient crossing of border points with the third countries, improving transport infrastructure, promoting transport logistics and introducing advanced transport systems. In his opinion, special attention should be paid to traffic safety by ensuring the implementation and control of measures by implementing a harmonised system of sanctions for infringements.
