The US Ambassador Expressed Interest in Lithuania’s Transport Priorities

On 15 September, Minister of Transport and Communications Algirdas Butkevičius at the meeting with the US Ambassador John A. Cloud discussed the topical issues in the Lithuanian transport and possible co-operation possibilities between the countries.

During the conversation with the US Ambassador, Minister Butkevičius noted that the main national transport priorities are the development of the highway Via Baltica, the construction of a new European standard gauge railway line Rail Baltica, preparation to join the Schengen area and the development of airports and Klaipėda State Seaport.

The Minister also emphasised that discussions over Lithuania’s financial perspectives for 2007-2013 are currently ongoing in the country. The US Ambassador John A. Cloud stressedthat Lithuania now has a favourable opportunity to properly modernise the national transport sector by using the EU funds.
