Airline Company Wizz Air is opening its base in Vilnius and has proposed 8 new routes

Wizz Air, the largest airline company providing cheap flights in Central and Eastern Europe, today has announced the decision to launch from 16 April 2011 their fourth basis, which will be established in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. From Vilnius Wizz Air will operate flights to 8 destinations. Minister of Transport and Communications Eligijus Masiulis welcomed the decision of Wizz Air to expand their activities in Lithuania. The Minister is positive that new routes will increase passenger flows in Vilnius International Airport.

At the Lithuanian and Chinese economic cooperation forum in Shanghai, Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications, Eligijus Masiulis, presented Lithuanian transport system and logistics opportunities in servicing transit freight flows between China and Western Europe.

Lithuania will make efforts regarding Russian permits for national carriers

Lithuania started negotiations with Russia regarding new permits for national freight transport companies. The Ministry of Transport and Communications will seek that national companies should receive no less permits to operate in Russian market in 2011 than in 2010.

Lithuanian representatives signed a declaration on the development of Via Carpatia road

Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Transport and Communications, Arūnas Štaras, together with Greek, Bulgarian, Romanian, Polish, Slovakian and Hungarian representatives, signed a declaration on the development of Via Carpatia road. Extending the Via Baltica project in the Southern direction, the Via Carpatia will link Poland, Baltic states and countries of the South-Eastern Europe.

Information on car queues at border-crossing points will be again available in the Internet

Drivers going to Belarus and the Kaliningrad District of Russian Federation are able again to find information on vehicle queues at border-crossing points and estimated time of waiting. This information is available on the Web Site of the Border-Crossing Control Points Directorate under the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

Lithuania aims at being listed in the group of 10 EU countries most advanced in traffic safety

Striving to improve the traffic safety Lithuania will make efforts to be listed within the period of 6 years in the group of 10 EU countries most advanced in traffic safety issues. Such a strategic objective is planned in the 2011–2015 State Traffic Safety Draft Programme, which has been submitted by the Ministry of Transport and Communications to the Government of the Republic of Lithuania.

Lithuania supports the development of Trans-European Transport Network and the implementation of Intelligent Transport Systems

On 15 October, Vice-Minister of Transport and Communications Arūnas Štaras participated at the EU Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council in Luxemburg. At the meeting there were discussed the strategic trends of European transport strategy for 2010-2020. Lithuania proposed to consider the development of Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and implementation of Intelligent Transport Systems as the most important priorities of future EU transport strategy.

Lithuania and Azerbaijan will promote freight transport between the Caspian, Black and Baltic Seas

With the aim to encourage closer cooperation relations, Lithuania and Azerbaijan are intending to establish a Commission on transport cooperation. The first meeting of the Commission is planned to be held in Vilnius in the beginning of the next year. This was agreed today in Baku (Azerbaijan) during the meeting of two ministers: Eligijus Masiulis, Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania, and Ziya Mammadov, Minister of Transport of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Minister of Transport and Communications Eligijus Masiulis, participating in Minsk (Belarus) international exhibition-conference “Transport and Logistics”, has emphasized that Lithuania is taking an active role in the development of East-West transport corridor, as the infrastructure of this corridor can ensure the reliable mobility of freight flows between the countries of Asia, CIS and Europe via the Baltic Sea region.

Three initial quarters of this year are successful for transport sector

Within the three quarters of this year the results achieved in transport sector are significantly better, if compared with the corresponding period of the last year. The flows of goods transported by rail, sea and air have grown significantly; also the freight handling in Klaipėda Seaport has increased. The amounts of passengers travelling by sea and air have grown as well.

Lithuania’s participation in the European project of sea motorways increases the role of Klaipėda Seaport

Lithuania’s participation in the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) project of sea motorways provides new opportunities to Klaipėda Seaport and the entire Baltic Sea region. Therefore it is important to ensure the efficient operation of the Seaport, to warranty its interoperability with railways and to attract freight flows from as large inland territories as possible. This was discussed at the meeting of Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Transport and Communications Arūnas Štaras, and the representative of the European Commission, sea motorways project coordinator Luis Valente de Oliveira.
