Queues of road vehicles crossing the State border will be regulated

From the noon of October 1 the marshalling, registration and regulation of road vehicles going from Lithuania to the Kaliningrad District of the Russian Federation will be operated by new rules. This should enable better order on the border-crossing territory.

The Seimas (Lithuanian Parliament) starts discussions on proposals regarding the voting via Internet

The Seimas started discussions regarding the legitimating of possibility for citizen to vote by electronic way during the elections for positions of President, Seimas, European Parliament, municipality councils, and at various referenda. Such proposal was already supported by the Government. “Voting via the Internet is a good way to enhance the activity of electors. It should also provide a possibility to save allocations, time and human resources used for election procedures. It should be a great step towards the implementation of eGovernment concept in Lithuania”, said Minister Masiulis.

Regional importance of Lithuanian transport and logistics sector has been presented in the Baltic Economic Forum

On 24 September, at the Baltic Economic Forum held in Riga, Eligijus Masiulis, Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications, presented the capacities of Lithuanian transport and logistics sector for attracting transit freight flows to the Baltic Sea region. Latvian Minister of Transport Kaspars Gerhards and Belorussian Prime Minister Sergej Sikorski participated at the Forum session dealing with the improvement of this region’s accessibility by perfecting inland and external transport links.

Transport ministers of the Nordic-Baltic countries signed a joint communiqué on the development of the Trans-European Transport Network in the region

Today the Annual Meeting of the Nordic-Baltic Ministers of Transport has been held in Trakai, Lithuania. At the Meeting the ministers discussed the guidelines of Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) development in the region. Discussions have been held on the funding perspectives and the present TEN-T policy review initiated by the European Commission. In order to contribute to the formation of favourable regional transport policy, the ministers signed a joint communiqué.

Within the period of five years the amount of data broadcasted by the mobile broadband communication will increase by 40 times

Experts forecast a very rapid development of mobile broadband communication. In future more and more everyday business will be managed by the Internet. This has been signified by participants of the International Internet Governance Forum IGF–2010 held earlier this month in Vilnius.

Minister Eligijus Masiulis: everybody needs having an opportunity of using the Internet

Today in Vilnius the global Internet Governance Forum IGF2010 was opened officially. The Forum will continue four days. Internet policy leaders and innovators from many countries of the world have gathered for joint discussions. At the opening ceremony participants of the Forum were welcomed by President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė, by UN Assistant Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Jomo Kwame Sundaram, and by Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications Eligijus Masiulis.

In the middle of September leaders of global Internet policy will gather in Vilnius from 70 countries all over the world

In the middle of September Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, will be hosting Internet policy leaders and innovators. On 14-17 September, the Fifth Global Internet Governance Forum will be held at the Lithuanian Exhibition and Convention Centre “Litexpo” in Vilnius. The Forum will deal with issues challenging the modern society, the life of which can not be imagined without application of modern technologies. One-and-a-half thousand representatives from 70 countries from all over the world are going to participate in the Forum.

Poland supports the idea of renewing the passenger train routes from Lithuania

Poland will support the initiative of Baltic railwaymen to launch a new railway route Tallinn – Warsaw or St Petersburg – Berlin. The route should go via the territory of Lithuania. This was declared by Polish Infrastructure Vice-Minister Juliusz Engelhardt during his meeting in Vilnius with Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Transport and Communications Arūnas Štaras.

National management model of International airports is changing with the view of more efficient operation

Following the advice of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the management model of Lithuanian airports will be changed – State Enterprises will be rearranged to Joint-Stock Companies. Today, the Government has approved this decision, and later on the draft laws related to the change of airports’ status will be submitted to the Seimas (the Parliament of Lithuania).

The Government will finally shut out the opportunities for collection of illegal dues

For the improvement of conditions for vehicles crossing the State border, as well as for people living close to border-crossing points, the Border-Control Points Directorate under the Ministry of Transport and Communications has been committed with the task to take care of parking sites necessary for vehicles awaiting border-crossing. By the decision of the Government the Directorate will be executing the functions of contractor for the sites construction, maintenance, transport flows management and property management.

Road vehicles of new type will reach Lithuanian market more rapidly

The Ministry of Transport and Communications makes efforts to accelerate and simplify the registration procedures for evaluation of new type vehicles’ conformity. This would enable new vehicles to reach Lithuanian market in a shorter period of time. Certain terms of administrative services related to the type approval of vehicles are being presently reduced already.
