The Minister of Transport and Communications says that Ryanair is developing in Lithuania and considering the opportunities for operating flights from Vilnius

Mr. Eligijus Masiulis, Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania, and Mr. Michael O'Leary, Chief Executive Officer of the Irish airline Ryanair, today informed about an agreement, which already in May will enable the establishment of Ryanair base for Central Europe countries at Kaunas Airport. Ryanair is also increasing the range of direct flights from Kaunas. In total, from Kaunas Airport there will be 18 destinations to European airports. Discussions with Ryanair airline are also held regarding the further development of Ryanair in Lithuania – the company considers its plans for launching the flights from Vilnius and Palanga airports.

Eligijus Masiulis, Minister of Transport and Communications, had a meeting with a representative of Irish Ryanair airlines that are offering cheap flights. The Ryanair representative is responsible for the development of flight routes. During the meeting perspectives of Ryanair were discussed regarding the airports in Lithuania.

Minister of Transport and Communications, Eligijus Masiulis, together with Ambassador of Turkey, Omer Altug, discussed issues of cooperation between Lithuania and Turkey. Minister Masiulis invited Turkey to participate in the development of the railway project “Viking”, which is connecting the Baltic Sea with the Black Sea.

Lithuania and Kazakhstan intend to cooperate in the development of East-West transport initiative and in providing better conditions for freight transportation between Asia and Europe. Today, during a meeting in Almata (Kazakhstan), these issues were discussed by Eligijus Masiulis, Minister of Transport and Communications of Lithuania, and Azat Bekturov, Minister of Transport and Communications of Kazakhstan.

Minister Eligijus Masiulis: “Transparent competition conditions in transport sector will be ensured by electronic public procurement”

From the beginning of this year all public procurement in the area of road construction and renovation will be operated by electronic way. “E-procurement will ensure transparent competitition conditions for road construction companies participating in tenders and will enable to save resources allocated from the State budget for transport infrastructure and EU aid funds”, emphasized Minister Masiulis.

Road construction and renovation from EU funding

In 2010 the construction and rehabilitation of Lithuanian roads will be supported by the European Union, i. e. using the finances of 2007-2013 EU Structural aid, European Regional Development, Cohesion and Trans-European Transport Network Development – TEN-T Funds.

For the implementation of the Economy stimulation plan the Ministry of Transport and Communications transferred 1.06 billion LTL from EU funding for business promotion in 2009.

“Let’s safeguard each other on roads”, the joint project of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Church and the Police will be going on this year as well

Heads of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Catholic Church and the Police have agreed on the joint actions regarding the reduction of traffic accidents causing fatalities on roads. The project deals with cultivating responsible behaviour based on Christian values.

Approved the plan of urgent actions of “Rail Baltica” project

Until 1 March the Ministry of Transport and Communications will prepare the project and action plan of “Rail Baltica” European gauge railway development from Polish/Lithuanian State border to Lithuanian/Latvian State border. In the plan there will be indicated the scope of works, terms and resources. This is foreseen in the plan of urgent actions necessary for the implementation of “Rail Baltica” project that was approved by the Government.

Minister of Transport and Communications, Eligijus Masiulis, says: “In 2009 the rate of deaths on roads was the lowest in the period from 1965”.

According to the initial data, in 2009 on Lithuanian roads the amounts of deaths were registered by 26.3 percent less than in 2008 (in 2009 – 368 people, in 2008 – 499 people), also the amount of injured people – 1334 people – decreased by almost 23 percent if compared with 2008 (in 2008 – 4484 injured people, in 2008 – 5818 injured people).

In 2009 the stevedoring results of Klaipėda Seaport exceeded all expectations

Basing on the preliminary calculations, in 2009 the Klaipėda Seaport has reached the record result in the history of the port stevedoring activities – 27.7 million tons of maritime cargo have been handled at the port.
