About EU assistance for transport sector, 2007-2013

What is EU structural assistance?

The structural assistance of the European Union consistently reduces social and economic differences between EU member states and regions. Its core values may be expressed in two words: “solidarity” and “cohesion”. Solidarity stands for the objective to assist regions at lower social and economic development level comparing to EU average.

Cohesion means that reduction of economic and social shortfall among EU member states is beneficial for everyone. 1/3 of the EU budget is dedicated to this policy.

Projects implemented in 2007-2013

1572 billion EUR of EU Structural Funds have been allocated for the implementation of transport projects in 2007–2013:

  • European Regional Development Fund – EUR 430 million;
  • Cohesion Fund – EUR 141 billion.

The EU Structural Funds were invested into international and regional road and railway networks, civil aviation, logistics centres, water transport, modernisation and development of municipal infrastructure.
