Minister of Transport and Communications Mr. Jaroslav Narkevič and Secretary General of the Intergovernmental Organization for International Carriage by Rail (OTIF) Mr. Wolfgang Küpper discussed possibilities of promotion of carriage of goods by rail between Asia and Europe.

“Participation in the OTIF activities allows Lithuania safeguarding more effective movement of passengers and goods on international routes based on the standards of this organization. It facilitates cooperation with other countries in the area of carriage of goods as restrictions applicable for carriage are avoided. OTIF will gain even more important position in the Baltic States when the rail line “Rail Baltica” connects this region with the countries of West Europe”, – said Minister J. Narkevič in appreciation of benefit of membership in OTIF.

The currently valid Convention concerning International Carriage by Rail (COTIF) is especially important as the amount of carriages by rail between Asia and Europe, as well as between Lithuania and West European countries is growing.

The minister drew attention of Mr. W. Küpper to especially favourable geographical location of Lithuania and its capacity to offer good conditions of carriage of goods by rail between Asia and Europe. He invited the guest to visit Kena Railway Station and to get familiar with its advantages. If waybills are provided in advance, the customs procedures take only 30 minutes in this station. Kena Station may service 43 pairs of trains per day (24 h). At present only half of its capacities is used.

Another important aspect of international carriages by rail is the project “Rail Baltica” that is under implementation. This European gauge railway will connect the Baltic States with West European countries.

“Rail Baltica” is a project that will grant competitiveness to the entire Baltic region, that will create more business opportunities, more work places and more income. It will also undoubtedly increase the importance of OTIF in this region, so we invite you to contribute to successful implementation of this project”, – said Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr. J. Narkevič.
