Lithuanian Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) were introduced to the EU Policy Agenda of the Ministry of Transport and Communications

On Thursday, Marius Skuodis, the Minister of Transport and Communications, had a remote meeting with MEPs elected in Lithuania and presented items on the EU agenda in the field of transport relevant to Lithuania, focusing on Rail Baltica project, connectivity via air, 5G development, common European Union road market, sustainable mobility, and development of economic infrastructure.

“With the European Union paying great attention to climate change mitigation and the Green Course, the Lithuanian transport sector faces a major challenge and at the same time an opportunity to contribute to the implementation of this policy. We envisage several main trends – green transformation in transport, digitization of the sector, implementation of 5G network technology in transport corridors, and other related measures”, said Mr. M. Skuodis, the Minister of Transport and Communications, after the meeting.

Discussions on the points of issue on the EU agenda included the revision of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) regulation, the progress of Rail Baltica, the European standard gauge rail line network project, and the possibility of building Klaipėda railway junction. According to the Minister, this is a strategic issue of substantial importance in developing a long-term communication strategy.

According to Mr. M. Skuodis, the long-term challenge for Lithuania is the expansion of flight geography – direct flights must connect Lithuania with all or at least most of the European capitals.

The Minister emphasized that by 2025 it is intended to ensure the gradual development of 5G technology throughout the country. This would allow speeding up the possibilities of application of smart technological solutions in the fields of transport as well as logistics and developing digital infrastructure in the international transport corridors, national roads, railways, and ports.
