737 km of gravel roads were asphalted with the help of EU assistance for 2007-2013. The priority was given to the roads crossing the settlements as well as those with intensive traffic and roads that connect larger settlements with highways and regional roads.

The benefits of asphalted roads are most appreciated by people living nearby – after the improvement of the road travelling is more comfortable and shorter, the noise and dust levels decrease. Besides, better regional roads encourage local tourism and make access to the regional parks, resorts, lakes and rivers a lot easier.

State expenses for road maintenance decrease, because asphalted roads are easier to maintain.

All asphalting works of gravel roads financed by EU in 2007-2013 were completed by 2011. Projects were carried out according to Operational Programme for Economic Growth, priority “Improvement of technical parameters in road and railway infrastructure of state importance”.
