Links with international transport corridors are the highways, that do not belong to the trans-European network, and regional roads, that are connected to the main highways. Traffic intensity is taken into consideration and therefore road surface is widened and strengthened in these links, bridges and viaducts are reconstructed, traffic and environment security measures are implemented.

Before reconstruction most of these roads did not meet required standards - the roadways, bridges and viaducts were too narrow. The traffic, especially heavy vehicles, has increased in these roads and the road surface was too weak. That is why cracks, breaking areas and deepening ruts appeared.

Reconstruction improved traffic conditions and increased the capacity of roads. The roads became safer, negative impact towards environment decreased together with road maintenance expenses. Quality roads provided better conditions for local businesses and improved logistics of goods and raw materials. Besides, long distance travelling became faster and safer.

All 2007-2013 works related to the links with international transport corridors were completed by 2011. Projects were implemented according to Operational Programme for Economic Growth, priority “Improvement of technical parameters in road and railway infrastructure of state importance”.

Development of links with international transport corridors:
  • Highways Vilnius–Utena and Klaipėda–Palanga: road stretches were widened up to 4 traffic lanes, bridges and crossroads have been reconstructed, traffic security and environment protection measures were implemented.
  • Local and regional roads: 18 road stretches were reconstructed in Lithuania with total distance of 130 km. The road surface was widened and strengthened, 7 bridges were reconstructed.
