New Chapter for Lithuanian Railways: Stadler Train Enters Passenger Service
On October 22, a new chapter began for Lithuanian Railways—the new “Stadler FLIRT” electric train set out on its first regular passenger service. The start of the largest renewal of the “LTG Link” train fleet in the history of independent Lithuania was ceremoniously marked at Vilnius Railway Station.
The first of 15 new trains began operating on the Vilnius–Kaunas–Vilnius route. In the coming months, the new electric and battery-powered trains will gradually replace existing trains on the country’s most important rail routes, thereby enhancing the passenger experience on Lithuanian railways.
“Traveling by train can be one of the best choices when we want to get around comfortably while also protecting the environment. From now on, Lithuania will be connected by even more modern trains, which will ensure a higher-quality travel experience for everyone—from seniors to students, from families to people with disabilities. We’ll all be able to travel even more comfortably, faster, and in a greener way,” says Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius.
“After many years, the passenger train fleet is finally undergoing a major overhaul. This is one of the most significant changes in the history of the railways since independence, and passengers will be the first to feel the benefits. The new trains will offer a completely new travel experience—with significantly more space, comfort, and modern amenities. Trips will be quieter, and the passenger compartments and seats will be more spacious, featuring tables and charging ports for electronic devices, while passengers will be able to enjoy a cup of coffee or a snack in the bistro area. Travel will also be more convenient for people with mobility impairments, parents with strollers, and cyclists, as the needs of every passenger have been carefully considered,” says Minister of Transport and Communications Juras Taminskas.
According to Arūnas Rumskas, interim CEO of the LTG Group, today we are sending off more than just a new train on its maiden voyage. This is yet another very tangible result of the modernization of Lithuania’s railways, which passengers will begin to experience starting today. “We are renewing trains, electrifying major rail lines, modernizing infrastructure, and consistently strengthening the role of railways in the country. Together, we are building a railway system that is convenient for people, efficient for the state, and ready to meet the needs of the future.”
A New Standard in Travel
“Modern transportation infrastructure makes travel more convenient for people and, at the same time, contributes to ensuring national security. By investing in railways, logistics hubs, and military mobility, we ensure the ability to rapidly receive and effectively supply allied forces, while strengthening the resilience of NATO’s eastern flank. The faster and more modern our railway infrastructure is, the more reliably our collective security is ensured,” – says Minister of National Defense Robertas Kaunas.
The first new “Stadler FLIRT” electric trains will run between Vilnius and Kaunas, and later on the Vilnius–Klaipėda–Vilnius route. It is planned that by the end of the year, the new trains will already be serving the majority of trips on this route.
Battery-powered trains will also begin carrying passengers in December. They will allow modern, electric-powered rolling stock to be used even on sections of track where the lines are not electrified. They will first be deployed on the Kaunas–Šiauliai–Kaunas and Radviliškis–Klaipėda–Radviliškis routes, and in the second half of December—on the Vilnius–Varėna–Marcinkonys–Vilnius route.
More Comfortable for All Passengers
The new trains are more spacious, have greater capacity, and are adapted to the diverse needs of passengers, including those with mobility challenges. Convenient ramps and interior design features will ensure easier movement, while the increased capacity of the rolling stock will allow for more efficient handling of passenger flows during peak hours.
After several decades, the bistro area is returning to Lithuanian trains—there, passengers will be able to purchase hot food and hot beverages. The trains will also feature more space for bicycles and other solutions designed for modern travel. All trains are more than half a meter wider than standard models, which will provide passengers with more space and comfort.
In total, “LTG Link” has purchased 15 new trains from the Swiss manufacturer “Stadler”: nine electric and six battery-powered. The latter will be able to operate on both electrified and non-electrified railway lines.
The contract with Stadler also provides for the option to purchase additional trains of the same type in the future and to continue expanding the modernized “LTG Link” fleet.
