Signalling to Be Installed on Existing Rail Baltica Line to Significantly Improve Safety
LTG Group company LTG Infra has signed a contract for the design, installation and technical maintenance of a signalling system on the existing Rail Baltica railway line section between the Lithuanian–Polish border and Palemonas. This stage is considered one of the most important steps in modernising existing infrastructure and improving railway traffic safety and efficiency in Lithuania.
According to Minister Juras Taminskas, just as road traffic is managed through traffic lights and road signs, railway traffic is controlled by signalling systems that monitor and regulate train movements in real time, ensure safe distances between trains, and help prevent collisions.
“Our priority is swift integration into the European railway network, strengthening the region’s transport infrastructure and enhancing its quality and capacity. The signalling of the railway line to Poland marks a significant and long-awaited step that will improve traffic safety and pave the way for faster and more convenient rail connections with neighbouring countries,” says Juras Taminskas, Acting Minister of Transport and Communications of Lithuania.
Railway signalling includes train control, traffic management, switch and communication systems. The project will cover approximately 130 km of railway line, 10 stations and 40 level crossings.
“The implementation of this system within the strategic Rail Baltica project is an important part of a broader railway modernisation direction. On the existing line, traffic management processes will be automated and train speeds increased – this is a sustainable, long-term investment in modern and advanced railway infrastructure,” says Vytautas Radzevičius, Director of Strategy and Business Development at LTG Group.
The value of the contract amounts to EUR 111.1 million (with VAT). The works will be carried out by a joint venture between AŽD Praha s.r.o. (Czech Republic) and Fima UAB (Lithuania).
“Upon completion, the project will deliver modernised signalling and related systems ensuring a higher level of traffic safety, more efficient train control, and real-time monitoring of infrastructure and traffic. This will create conditions to increase the capacity of the railway line, improve punctuality, and ensure more reliable passenger and freight transportation,” says Petr Žatecký, Commercial Export Director at AŽD Praha.
“Together with our consortium partner AŽD Praha, we are proud to contribute to stronger transport connectivity between Lithuania and Europe and to help shape the future of the country’s railway infrastructure,” emphasises Vytenis Pinaitis, CEO of Fima.
The European standard gauge section will be integrated into a unified traffic management and control system, ensuring interoperability with the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). The solutions implemented will meet the highest safety standards, including Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL‑4) – the highest safety classification applied to railway signalling systems.
Modernisation works are also currently underway on the railway line section between the Polish–Lithuanian border and Kaunas.
Rail Baltica is a strategic project for both the LTG Group and the European Union and is the largest railway infrastructure project in the history of the Baltic States. Once completed, it will deliver an electrified European standard gauge railway line connecting Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia with Central and Western Europe, strengthening regional integration, civil and military mobility, and the overall resilience of the transport system.
