LTG Cargo has stopped the rental of platform railcars in Russia and Belarus
In response to the Russian government’s war against Ukraine, the freight company LTG Cargo of the Lithuanian Railways (“Lietuvos geležinkeliai” – LTG) Group has stopped the rental of platform railcars. Since 7 March, the company’s platform railcars cannot be transported either directly to Russia or Belarus or in transit to countries other than Latvia and Estonia.
The decision aims to restrict the use of platform railcars for military purposes in Russia and Belarus. According to unofficial sources, platform railcars entering Russia or Belarus could be nationalized and used to transport military equipment.
“Currently, taking into account both official and received unofficial information, we are implementing complex actions. First, we assess the possible links between customers and EU-sanctioned individuals. If we identify such connections, we will refuse and already refuse to transport their cargo – at the end of last week we stopped the transportation of “Metalloinvest” cargo. Secondly, we aim to prevent the use of the company’s platform railcars for military purposes. We unequivocally condemn the military actions of the aggressor countries against Ukraine, and the actions we are taking are aimed at reducing the links with them so that they cannot use the company’s assets,” says Eglė Šimė, CEO of LTG Cargo.
LTG Cargo appealed to Russian Railways and Belarusian Railways demanding that they would return the railcars owned by the Lithuanian company as a matter of urgency. Urgent return of railcars has also been introduced for railcars in transit through these countries. According to the latest data, there are currently 325 LTG Cargo platform railcars from Lithuania in Russia and Belarus.
