Minister of Transport and Communications in Poland to discuss international logistics corridors and their development
On Tuesday, Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis is leaving for Poland, where, at the invitation of the Minister of Infrastructure Andrzej Adamczyk, he will attend an international conference on issues related to the development of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), and the formation of new transport and logistics chains.
“Poland is an exceptionally important neighbour and strategic partner of Lithuania, with whom we are developing joint strategic transport projects Rail Baltica, Via Baltica, Via Carpatia, together we accelerate their implementation. It is extremely important for us to jointly develop the North–South transport corridor from the Baltic ports to the Black Sea in order to create additional transport connections with Ukraine, as well as to ensure greater opportunities for passenger, freight and military mobility in the region,” says M. Skuodis.
The transport ministers of Lithuania, Poland, Sweden, Greece, representatives of other countries and participants of the international conference will discuss the TEN-T revision, the role of national ports and railways in ensuring efficient connections and uninterrupted connectivity along the TEN-T corridors. The event will also include discussions on the military mobility needs of the region and their financing, as well as further assistance to Ukraine.
The TEN-T network connects major European cities, seaports and airports, rail terminals and other transport hubs. This network includes Lithuania’s most important international road and rail connections: Rail Baltica, Via Baltica, highway Klaipėda–Kaunas–Vilnius, railway Vilnius–Klaipėda, as well as Klaipėda State Seaport, Vilnius, Kaunas, Palanga airports and Kaunas Intermodal Terminal.
As the EU is revising the TEN-T policy, Lithuania’s proposal is to complement the new TEN-T network with the European gauge railway track Vilnius–Klaipėda. In Lithuania, it is already planned to start analysing alternatives to this track.
The implementation of this railway line project and the development of other bilateral and international logistics connections are consolidated in a memorandum signed by the transport ministers of Lithuania and Poland in Vilnius on 16 September 2022.
