Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis headed to the Polish-Ukrainian border, where he will participate in a High-level Dialogue on connection of the Baltic ports with Ukraine

This Wednesday, Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis is leaving for a two-day visit to the Polish-Ukrainian border in Rzeszów, where he will participate in a High-level Dialogue on the development of strategic transport links in Central and Eastern Europe and support for Ukraine, and will also inspect strategic infrastructure facilities near the Ukrainian border with his Polish counterpart, Andrzej Adamczyk.

The High-level Dialogue is being organised by the International Transport Forum (ITF) and the Polish Ministry of Infrastructure to discuss how to improve connections with Ukraine by ensuring efficient transport corridors with the West and the seaports of the Baltic countries. At the conference, Minister Skuodis will moderate one of the ministerial round-table discussions on “Central and Eastern Europe as a gate to the world for a safe and developing Ukraine".

During the event, the Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications plans to meet with the Rt Hon Mark Harper, UK Secretary of State for Transport. Together with the ministers of Poland, the United Kingdom and Ukraine, there will also be a press conference to present a joint statement of the 22 ITF Member Countries on the reconstruction of Ukraine’s transport infrastructure.

Continuing his trip, Minister Skuodis will visit the Korczowa-Krakowiec land border crossing between Ukraine and Poland and the Przemyśl railway station. Here at the Polish-Ukrainian border, another discussion is planned between the European Commission, representatives of European financial institutions, and ministers of Ukraine and other Eastern European countries about financing for the “solidarity corridors” between the European Union and Ukraine.

Minister Skuodis and the Polish Minister of Infrastructure will also inspect the tunnel section of the strategic infrastructure project Via Carpatia in the south-east of Poland, near the city of Rzeszów. Lithuania and Poland aim to jointly develop a north-south transport corridor from the ports of the Baltic countries to the Black Sea, in order to create additional transport links with Ukraine and increase passenger, cargo and military mobility options in the region.

In May 2023, Lithuania will assume the presidency of the ITF. It is currently being chaired by the United Kingdom.
