Minister Skuodis and his Finnish counterpart discussed joint initiatives in the areas of the digitalisation of transport and logistics, the launch of the 5G network, plans of economic revival and recovery
Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis and Minister of Transport of Finland Timo Harakka remotely discussed joint initiatives in the area of the digitalisation of transport and logistics, the plans of Finland and Lithuania to launch the 5G network, and the use of hydrogen technologies. Finland has expressed its support for the Rail Baltica project and has proposed to coordinate common positions on solving important transport issues in Europe.
"Finland is one of the global leaders in the areas of energy efficiency, innovation and new technologies, as well as a close neighbour of the region and a reliable partner of Lithuania. We are pleased with dynamic and positive bilateral relations, we cooperate in the implementation of the Rail Baltica project, we are concerned about Finland's experience in launching the 5G network in the country, as well as investing in infrastructure for economic recovery after the pandemic," said Minister of Transport and Communications Skuodis.
Finland is investing heavily in infrastructure to achieve economic recovery.
At the meeting, Minister of Transport of Finland Harakka said that communication and cooperation between the Baltic States and Scandinavia is very welcome and inspiring; therefore, it was agreed to engage in active coordination of common positions on solving the most important issues in the field of transport in Europe.
A relevant area for closer cooperation is the digitalisation of transport and logistics and electronic freight documents. According to the Minister of Transport of Finland, the application of solutions based on data could substantially optimise the transport process, thus also addressing issues on climate change. The ministers consider it necessary to do so at the regional level.
Finland has great ambitions in the field of 5G, the network already operates in 70 municipalities of the country, but according to Minister Harakka, there is still room for improvement. In Lithuania, the 5G network is planned to become available in the capital within this year, and it should reach at least 5 major cities in 2023.
The Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Finland, the Helsinki Region Chamber of Commerce and the Enterprise Europe Network are organising a webinar this year to establish a dialogue between countries on the use of green hydrogen. According to the Finnish Minister, the use of hydrogen has a "bright future" for heavy transport and shipping.
