Minister Skuodis discusses Lithuania’s aspiration to open up the market of flights to the United States of America for Lithuanian air carriers with the US Secretary of Transportation

Currently at least two Lithuanian air carriers have real opportunities and are looking to expand their operations in the US market. The Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis announced this after meeting with the US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg in Leipzig, at the International Transport Forum (ITF). The meeting also discussed Lithuania’s progress and process for the country to successfully complete all necessary procedures for the use of aircraft registered in Lithuania for flights to the United States.

Lithuania is preparing to open the US market to the country’s carriers. Mr Skuodis, who visited the United States last autumn, discussed the project initiated by the Ministry with the US Department of Transportation, the FAA and the Transportation Security Administration that would allow to enable aircraft of airlines registered in Lithuania to carry out operations in the USA.

“Lithuania has already initiated the procedures and we are preparing to submit an application to the responsible US authorities in autumn to have the audit of the Lithuanian aviation sector carried out by the beginning of 2023 at the latest. This will enable aircraft registered in Lithuania to carry out flights to the USA. It would be a huge impetus for the development of Lithuanian aviation business, providing even better and more favourable conditions for increasing the business volumes,” said Minister Skuodis after the meeting with the US Minister in Leipzig.

Lithuania aims to become the first among the Baltic States to have successfully carried out an FAA audit and other procedures of the US authorities and ready to provide the air companies registered in the country with the possibility to freely carry out operations in the USA not only from Lithuania, but also from other countries in the world.

The bilateral meeting also discussed assistance to Ukraine, the experience of both countries in the implementation of transport infrastructure projects, the development of electric mobility, transport innovation and other issues.
