Minister Taminskas Calls on EU Member States to Strengthen Cooperation on Autonomous Transport
At the informal meeting of EU transport ministers in Dublin, Minister of Transport and Communications of Lithuania Juras Taminskas called for closer cooperation among European Union (EU) Member States in the field of autonomous transport to develop common standards and enhance road safety.
“Lithuania is already among the first European countries to have created the conditions for testing autonomous vehicles on public roads. We are confident that these technologies can contribute to safer and more convenient mobility. However, their full potential will only be realised through common standards and close cooperation among Member States across Europe,” said Minister Taminskas.
The Minister noted that Lithuania strongly supports a permanent EU-level coordination mechanism involving the European Commission, Member States, infrastructure operators and industry actors.
Minister Taminskas underlined that, from a road safety perspective, the EU should adopt common technical standards for autonomous traffic and for standardized data exchange between vehicles, infrastructure and authorities. Key cybersecurity requirements must also be harmonized across the EU. He stressed that these standards and rules should be enforced together with coordinated deployment on core European transport corridors.
The meeting also underscored the importance of establishing clear EU funding instruments dedicated to road safety innovation.
In May, the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Lithuanian Transport Safety Administration (LTSA) recognised the temporary EU type approval granted by the Dutch vehicle authority RDW for the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) (FSD) system. Lithuania is the second EU Member State to facilitate the use of advanced driver assistance systems while developing a clear, safe and innovation-friendly regulatory framework for their implementation.
In June this year, Minister Taminskas signed the Joint Declaration of Intent concerning the creation of a cross-border testbed for the deployment of automated vehicles on the margins of the Transport Council in Luxembourg.
