Minister Taminskas to Discuss Regional Security and Transport Sector Resilience in Brussels

On Tuesday, Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications Juras Taminskas will travel to Brussels. During the visit, he will meet members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Transport and Tourism to discuss strengthening security in the Baltic Sea region and enhancing the resilience of the transport sector.

The meeting will focus on coordinating a joint response to hybrid attacks by the Belarusian regime targeting Lithuania and other countries in the region. Discussions will primarily address contraband-smuggling balloon incursions, which pose a serious risk to civil aviation safety. The talks will also cover EU carriers and their assets that have been unlawfully detained in Belarus.

Mr Taminskas is also scheduled to meet Alberto Mazzola, Executive Director of the Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER).

“Given today’s geopolitical challenges, closer coordination at European level is essential. Strengthening the security of airspace and critical infrastructure along the EU’s eastern border, as well as investing in military mobility projects, are among our key priorities on the international agenda,” said Minister Taminskas.

The Minister added that Lithuania also welcomes the Eastern Flank Watch and European Drone Wall initiatives aimed at further strengthening collective defence.

The need for a coordinated EU response to hybrid attacks by the Belarusian regime is regularly discussed at meetings of EU transport, interior and foreign affairs ministers.

In the second half of 2025, contraband balloons from Belarus caused more than a dozen disruptions at Vilnius Airport and one at Kaunas Airport. In total, over 350 flights and approximately 51,000 passengers were affected.

Following these hybrid attacks, Minister Taminskas last year called on representatives of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE).
