Minister Taminskas: Train tickets will be halved for two months as fuel prices rise
Due to the recent rise in fuel prices, Minister of Transport and Communications Juras Taminskas and LTG Group's passenger transportation company, LTG Link, have decided to reduce the price of all train tickets in Lithuania.
“Rising fuel prices affect everyone, and therefore the Government must act promptly and decisively. Reducing train ticket prices by half constitutes genuine support for the people and signals our determination to pursue alternatives to increasingly expensive fuel,” said Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė.
From April until the beginning of summer, passengers will be able to purchase tickets for local rail services at a 50 percent discount.
“As the oil crisis intensifies, we are taking real action. With fuel prices reaching record highs, we are giving residents the opportunity to travel by train at half the cost. Everyone – from families and seniors to students – will feel the benefit; people should not become hostages to rising prices,” said Minister Taminskas.
“The reduction of train ticket prices is a strategic move to strengthen the appeal of public transportation and give residents a viable alternative as individual travel expenses grow. A comfortable and economical journey encourages long‑term sustainable choices, contributing to our goal of positioning rail as the core of the national transport network,” said Kristina Meidė, CEO of the LTG Link.
The Ministry of Transport and its subordinate enterprises and companies are currently assessing the potential impact on the sector should energy prices rise significantly further due to the geopolitical situation. Possible measures and organisational preparedness for various scenarios were discussed last week at a meeting initiated by Minister Taminskas.
The new trains that will join the LTG Link rolling stock this autumn are expected to contribute to reducing fossil fuel consumption over time.
In total, 15 new trains – 9 electric and 6 battery-powered – will be added to the LTG Link fleet. 6 of the new units have already arrived in Lithuania and are currently undergoing testing.
In the previous year, LTG Link transported 5.9 million passengers – across local and international services, as well as those using trains for everyday travel.
