Ministry of Transport and Communications discussed transport sector efficiency and transparency initiatives with Transparency International
On Friday, Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis met with Sergej Muravjov, Head of Transparency International Lithuania, and discussed the reform of the Road Maintenance and Development Programme (RMDP) initiated by the Ministry, the adoption of which will be decided by the Seimas this week, also strategic road projects, open data, and transparency of the transport sector, and possibilities for further cooperation were sought.
“We pay particular attention to increasing the transparency of the sector. A simpler and clearer system for financing road infrastructure based on established criteria and long-term planning, the extensive opening of data from both the Ministry and managed companies are among the Ministry’s most important aims and works. Cooperation with Transparency International, the exchange of best practices is particularly important in modernising the whole transport sector,” said Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis at the meeting.
According to the Minister, the RMDP reform and increasing funding for municipal roads will allow municipalities to solve the problems of road reconstruction and improve the state of roads in Lithuania more quickly. Municipalities will gain more independence in using the RMDP funds; by implementing the recommendations of the National Audit Office, they will be obliged to use the funds according to a clear procedure based on transparent criteria, so that the infrastructure managers and society would be aware of the reasons and motives of investment decisions.
In addition, the Ministry of Transport and Communications plans to focus next year on opening up the available data, which is expected to be made possible both in the decision-making process and in other areas of the transport sector.
Transparency International Lithuania is a branch of the international organisation Transparency International, which aims to promote civil anti-corruption initiatives and their organisation in Lithuania.
