Lithuania’s Ambassador to Canada and ICAO Permanent Representative Meets ICAO Leadership
The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania to Canada and Permanent Representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Egidijus Meilūnas, met with Mr Toshiyuki Onuma, President of the Council of ICAO, and Mr Juan Carlos Salazar, Secretary General of ICAO in Montréal.
During the meeting, the Ambassador expressed concern over the recurring problem of unauthorized free balloons launched from the territory of Belarus that systematically violate the airspace of the Republic of Lithuania.
The Ambassador also noted that this recurring issue has a negative impact on civil aviation, including passengers, airlines, ground handling companies, and airports. It constitutes a breach of the Convention on International Civil Aviation and therefore requires an appropriate response from ICAO.
The Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania, Juras Taminskas, first addressed ICAO in October of last year, at the very beginning of the hybrid attack. Last week, the Minister announced that collected evidence regarding the ongoing hybrid attack against Lithuania’s civil aviation had been formally submitted to ICAO.
