M. Skuodis to discuss strategic transport and military mobility projects with German counterpart
Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis will meet with the German Federal Minister for Digital and Transport dr. Volker Wissing, who is visiting Lithuania. The ministers will discuss the implementation of strategic infrastructure and military mobility projects in the Baltic region, relevant issues related to the digitisation and greening of transport and logistics.
During the meeting of the Lithuanian and German transport ministers, it is planned to discuss the progress of the rail infrastructure project Rail Baltica, which is important for Europe, as well as the need to increase European funding for projects improving dual-use — military and civilian — mobility connections with Europe and Ukraine.
To date, Lithuania has secured almost 120 million euros of EU funds for the development of military mobility projects. These investments are aimed at three sections of the Via Baltica highway and the railway loading site in Palemonas. According to M. Skuodis, Lithuania is preparing a plan for further military mobility projects, but it is necessary to ensure a larger EU military mobility budget.
The meeting will also focus on electric vehicles and other climate-friendly vehicle technologies, the development of alternative fuels infrastructure, transport innovations and digitisation in international logistics chains. According to the European Green Deal, Europe must transition to a climate-neutral economy by 2050.
This is the second meeting of the ministers of both countries — Minister M. Skuodis and the Lithuanian delegation visited Germany in May 2022.
Last year, regular intermodal train runs to Duisburg (Germany) were launched. Strengthening the relations between the two countries and developing new logistics routes is foreseen in the Memorandum of Cooperation between Hamburg and Klaipėda Seaports signed during that visit.
