Minister Taminskas: Europe Must Mobilise and Strengthen Its Network Resilience
Juras Taminskas, Lithuania’s Minister of Transport and Communications, stresses that strengthening the resilience of critical telecommunications infrastructure is essential to safeguarding Europe’s economic security amid increasing hybrid threats. He delivered this message on Monday during the European Union (EU) Ministerial Roundtable at the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona.
In 2026, the European Commission introduced the Digital Networks Act, aimed at creating a single EU internal market for telecommunications, increasing the competitiveness of the sector, and promoting investment in digital infrastructure. According to Mr Taminskas, the need to review the current rules is particularly relevant in light of the challenges presently facing the EU.
“GNSS interference, smuggling balloons, and other hybrid threats do not stop at national borders – they have a direct impact on the security of the entire European Union. We must mobilise and use all available means to strengthen the resilience of critical infrastructure,” said Minister Taminskas.
The discussion highlighted that advanced communication networks mean faster internet, more reliable services, and greater digital opportunities for both cities and regions. According to Mr Taminskas, the Digital Networks Act will be among the priorities during Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2027.
The European Parliament and the Council of the EU are now expected to consider the European Commission’s initial proposal.
The Mobile World Congress, held annually in Barcelona, brings together leading global decision-makers, business leaders, and technology developers. The event showcases innovations in communication technologies and contributes to the shaping of the sector’s strategic development.
