Minister Taminskas Heading to Cyprus for an Informal Meeting of Transport Ministers
Minister of Transport and Communications of Lithuania, Juras Taminskas, is heading to Nicosia to take part in an informal meeting of European Union (EU) transport ministers hosted by the Cypriot Presidency.
Discussions will focus on closer cooperation to enhance the resilience of the European transport system, promote sustainable cross‑border links, and accelerate the deployment of interoperable railway technologies in Europe.
The ministers will also discuss strengthening European ports as key pillars of transport resilience, competitiveness and strategic autonomy, as well as investments in digitalisation, alternative fuels infrastructure and sustainable logistics. These topics will be addressed at the Informal Maritime Transport Council, which will take place in Nicosia later the same day.
As part of preparations for the upcoming Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the EU, a bilateral meeting is planned between Minister Taminskas and Greece’s Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Vassilis Kikilias. The Minister will also hold discussions with counterparts from the Council Presidency Trio partner countries, Ireland and Greece. Ireland will assume the EU Council Presidency in the second half of 2026, Lithuania in the first half of 2027, followed by Greece in the second half of the year.
Lithuania aims to develop North-South corridors within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) to connect the Baltic, Black, and Aegean Seas, with particular emphasis on Via Baltica, Rail Baltica, the development of the southern part of the Port of Klaipėda, and other projects essential for military mobility.
Following Lithuania’s proposal, the TEN‑T network now includes a European‑gauge railway link to Klaipėda and new military mobility links between Lithuania and Poland, strengthening Baltic connectivity with Europe.
